December 24, 2011—Retailers across the country continue to remove Enfamil Newborn formula from store shelves, with the list now including Wal-Mart, Walgreen's, Kroger, Safeway and Supervalu. Retailers have pulled 12.5-ounce cans of Enfamil Newborn formula with lot number ZP1K7G due to concern of possible bacteria contamination. The actions by these retailers were voluntary and not part of a government recall on Enfamil products.
Federal officials continue to investigate the formula after the death of Avery Cornett, a ten-day-old infant from Missouri. Preliminary hospital tests indicated that he died from an infection caused by Cronobacter sakazakii, a rare bacteria that can be found in dried milk and powdered formula. The FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Missouri Department of Health are coordinating their efforts to identify the cause of Avery's illness.
A second infant in Missouri became ill in late November after consuming several different types of baby formula. That child has recovered and state health officials continue to investigate to identify a possible link. |
